Pobby and Dingan
is an interesting book, and I like it very much. It is easy to read except for
some of the slang words that I did not know. I looked up some of the words like
“fruit loop” (page 1) on my translator, but I still do not understand what “Fairdinkum”
(page 4) means. The story was easy to follow, even when I did not know some
words and could not find what they meant.
At the start of
the book, I thought that the brother was mean to his sister about her friends Pobby
and Dingan. He made her cry. I thought that he was really mean when he
pretended to hit Pobby and Dingan.
Kellyanne
glared at me through tears the way she did the time I slammed the door of the
ute in Dingan’s face or the time I walked over to where Pobby was supposed to
be sitting and punched the air and kicked the air in the head to show Kellyanne
that Pobby was a figment of her imaginings.” (Pages 1-2)
Kellyanne’s mother was very kind to
her about Pobby and Dingan. She would sometimes put out food for them. The
brother, Ashmol, would get upset, but the mother told Ashmol “that they were
quieter and better behaved than me and deserved the grub (page 4).” I thought that it was cool that some of the
people in the town were very nice about Pobby and Dingan. People would say
hello to them, and Dingan won the third place in the Opal Princess competition.
But
one time Ernie Finch let Kellyanne enter Dingan in for the Opal Princess
competition because Kellyanne had a cold. I’m not kidding. And the judges voted
Dingan third place. (Page 5)
The father was never mean about Pobby
and Dingan, even before he started pretending that they were real. Once, when
Kellyanne was outside playing with them, he said to Mum “I kind of wish that
they were real friends, Mum” (page 7).
After
the father started pretending that Pobby and Dingan were real, and took them to
work with him one day, he forgot to bring them home. Pobby and Dingan were
lost. I did not like that Kellyanne got
so sick when Pobby and Dingan were lost, but I did like that her brother
started being kind to her. He should have not been so mean before, but it was
good that he was kind to her after she got sick. Ashmol would do anything to
help his sister get better. He put up signs around town asking for help to find
Pobby and Dingan.
LOST! HELP!
KELLYANNE WILLIAM’S FRIENDS POBBY AND
DINGAN. DESCRIPTION: IMAGINARY, QUIET.
REWARD IF FOUND
(PAGE 33)
I
was sad that Kellyanne said that Pobby and Dingan were dead when she saw the
opal that Ashmol found.
Ashmol!
You’ve found the bodies. You’ve found Pobby and Dingan! This is it! This is the
stone that Dingan wears in her bellybutton!” (Page 61)
But, I was happy that Kellyanne
believed that her friends had been found. It was not good that Kellyanne made
Ashmol promise to use the opal to pay for the funeral for Pobby and Dingan,
because the family could have used the money for some other things.
