Blog 13 Spelling Bee - Review

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, performed by the Cheshire Academy Varsity Players, was a very good play and was my favorite play that I have ever seen that was done in English. It is a story about a spelling bee at the Putnam Middle School. In the play, there were six young people competing to win the contest to spell words. Also, there were four people from the audience who were in the contest. The four people from the audience were three teachers and one student.
The whole play was very funny and I paid attention the whole time. One thing that was really funny was that the people in the contest used different ways to help them spell the words. One person would write the words on the floor with his foot. Another would write on her arm, and another would read the word out loud. It was also funny that one teacher was out of the contest on the first word, and one teacher was out on the second word. I think that the teachers being out of the contest made all of the students laugh. Whenever someone would be thinking about a word, there would be singing, and the four cheerleaders would come out and dance. The singing and dancing were funny too.
All of the different characters in the play made it interesting. One character that I really liked was Vice-Principal Douglas Panch. Early in the play, he seemed very mean and forceful. But, as the play went on, he became more kind. He seemed like he was really a nice person, but he wanted people to think that he was mean. The character, Chip Tolentino, was the first person out of the contest. I felt sorry for him because he first spelled his word wrong, then right, but he was put out of the contest anyway. The last three people in the contest were Olive Ostrovsky, Logainne SchwartzandGrubenniere and William Barfee. William Barfee was the one who would spell words with his foot, and he is the one who won the contest.
The costumes were very colorful and I could hear the people very well and understand what they were saying. I liked the music that the band played, and they played very well. The blue and white banner sign for the contest was very good too. I would recommend that people should see this play. I enjoyed it a lot and it kept my attention the whole time.
