Chapter 6
1.
Reflect on the letter that Sookan receives from
her sister. Describe the conflict between the two women. Also discuss the
internal conflict (with herself) that Sookan has. Why is this important to the
novel and to Sookan’s identity?
The conflict between them is that
Sookan’s sister has already decided what Sookan should do with her life, and
Sookan is not sure yet. Sookan is very busy and works hard every day. She is trying
to adjust to a new place, and her sister does not think about that. All her
sister thinks about is her own life and what she wants Sookan to do.
Sookan is upset about what her sister wrote in
the letter, but she asks herself if her sister is right to be angry. It is
important to the novel and Sookan’s identity because, whatever happens, Sookan
has her own feelings, but she is always thinking about what she is expected to
do because of her culture
