What courses does Sookan take in her first
semester at school and which is most difficult?
Sookan signed up for world literature, world religions,
Greek and Roman Culture, and early European history. Her most difficult course was European
history.

Who is Marci? Describe her appearance and
personality.
Marci lives in the single room across the hall from Sookan
and Ellen. Marci was tall and thin, and very pale. She had short brown hair and wore no makeup.
She wore loose clothes and was pretty.

What job does Sookan get to earn extra money for
books?
Sookan got a job babysitting for Professor Bennett and his
wife.

How does Sookan feel about her older sister?
Describe her conflicting emotions.
Sookan loves and respects her older sister. She is a nun,
and she is proud of her. Sookan’s sister
told her that she wants Sookan to work alongside her. Sookan has conflicting
emotions because she feels guilty about not keeping a journal and sending it to
her sister once a week like her sister told her to do. Sookan is very busy.
Also, Sookan may not want to be a nun like her sister.
