Melancholy is a feeling of sadness.

Why is Sookan melancholy after reading her
mother’s letter?
Sookan could tell that things were difficult back home, and
she felt ashamed for not being there to help her mother through her hardships.

Describe Sookan’s mother (her character and
personality).
Sookan’s mother was very kind and she hated imposing on her
children. She felt responsible for setting a good example. She loved her
children and expected her children to love each other. She appreciated what she
had in life and helped people who were less fortunate than her.
